The leaders of the Easter Rising in Ireland in 1916 wanted to "guarantee religious and civil liberty, equal rights and equal opportunities to all citizens" in an independent republic, and sought to establish this through an open rather than covert challenge to the British state. The rebellion was mercilessly suppressed. This tea towel shows the statue of Ireland atop the General Post Office which became the rebellion headquarters. The names of those subsequently executed are listed.
